SU46 — Poland’s Versatile Diesel-Electric Workhorse
The SU46 emerged in the early 1970s as a sturdy, all-purpose diesel-electric locomotive designed to bridge gaps across Poland’s non-electrified main lines. Built by H. Cegielski in Poznań as an evolution of the popular SU45, the SU46 blended proven mechanical systems with enhanced power and braking features—earning its reputation as a dependable hauler of both passenger expresses and heavy freight.
A Rugged Diesel Workhorse
From its angular cab fronts to the robust Co-Co wheel arrangement, the SU46 was engineered for endurance. Its 12-cylinder 2112 kW diesel engine delivered steady torque at low speeds, while six traction motors translated power smoothly to the rails. The locomotive’s beefy frame, fully welded and reinforced, could handle the stresses of steep gradients and heavy consists without faltering.
Power and Performance
Rated at approximately 2,500 horsepower, the SU46 cruised comfortably at 120 km/h under passenger load and slowed only gradually with its advanced dynamic braking system—a feature borrowed from electric traction designs. Its fuel-efficient four-stroke diesel cycle and sizeable onboard capacity gave it ranges exceeding 1,000 km between refills, making it ideal for long rural routes and cross-country expresses.
In Service Across Non-Electrified Lines
During its heyday, roughly fifty SU46 units formed the backbone of PKP’s diesel fleet. You’d spot them on scenic mountain branch lines, pulling sleeper coaches through the Tatra foothills, or charging across the plains with platelayers’ ballast trains. Their dual-cabin layout and straightforward controls allowed crews to operate in either direction without turning—reducing idle time at terminal stations.
A Legacy of Reliability
Though newer diesel and electro-diesel models have since appeared, many SU46s remain in service today—testament to their over-built construction and ease of maintenance. Enthusiast groups often showcase refurbished examples at rail fairs, where polished exterior panels and gleaming domed vents draw nods of respect from railfans and former drivers alike.
