Star 266 — Poland’s All-Terrain Military Truck

The Star 266, produced at the Starachowice truck factory from 1973 to the early 2000s, became one of Poland’s most respected military vehicles. Designed to replace the Star 660, it combined impressive off-road capability with the payload capacity needed for a wide range of army and specialized roles—earning a reputation for reliability in the most challenging conditions.
Rugged and Purpose-Built Design
The Star 266 featured a robust 6x6 drivetrain, high ground clearance, and a strong ladder-frame chassis, allowing it to tackle mud, snow, sand, and steep gradients with ease. Its forward-control cab, with seating for three, offered excellent visibility and quick access for the crew. A large flatbed with fold-down sides made it adaptable for troop transport, cargo, or mounting specialized military equipment.
Dependable Power and Performance
Powered by a 6-cylinder, 6.8-liter diesel engine producing around 150 horsepower, the Star 266 delivered the torque necessary for hauling loads of up to 5 tons across rough terrain. A 5-speed manual gearbox paired with a two-speed transfer case gave drivers the gearing flexibility to handle both highway cruising and extreme off-road situations. Its sealed electrical systems and fording capability allowed it to operate in deep water and harsh weather.
A Versatile Military Platform
Beyond its standard cargo and troop carrier versions, the Star 266 was adapted into fuel tankers, mobile workshops, recovery vehicles, and missile transporters. It served not only with the Polish Armed Forces but also in export markets, where it proved itself in equally demanding environments.
A Continuing Legacy
Many Star 266 trucks remain in service with military units, fire brigades, and civilian operators—testament to their rugged design and long service life. Restored examples are a favorite among military vehicle collectors and are frequently seen at historical reenactments and off-road rallies.
