Star 200 — Poland’s Universal Medium-Duty Truck

The Star 200, produced at the Starachowice truck factory from 1973 to 1994, became one of Poland’s most versatile and widely used medium-duty trucks. Designed to replace the aging Star 28 and 29 models, it brought improved performance, reliability, and comfort to a wide range of transport roles—earning a lasting place in both civilian and military service.
Functional and Durable Design
The Star 200 featured a forward-control cab with a distinctive flat front and large windscreen, giving drivers excellent visibility. The simple, boxy shape made it easy to adapt into multiple variants—flatbeds, tippers, tankers, fire engines, and specialized service vehicles. Built on a strong ladder frame with leaf-spring suspension, it could handle demanding road conditions and heavy payloads.
Dependable Powertrain
Under the cab sat a 6-cylinder, 6.8-liter diesel engine producing around 150 horsepower, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This combination delivered solid torque for hauling cargo, while the straightforward mechanical systems kept maintenance simple. The truck’s durability and ease of repair made it a favorite for fleets operating in rural areas or under harsh conditions.
Serving Poland and Beyond
The Star 200 became a common sight on construction sites, in state-owned transport companies, and in the Polish armed forces. Its adaptability meant it could be seen delivering goods in cities, carrying building materials in the countryside, or working as an emergency vehicle. Many units were also exported to other countries within the Eastern Bloc and beyond.
A Legacy of Reliability
Even decades after production ended, Star 200 trucks can still be found in operation—proof of their robust design. Restored examples are popular among enthusiasts, with their clean, utilitarian lines and historical significance making them a highlight at vintage vehicle rallies.
