Sokół 1000 — Poland’s Pre-War Motorcycle Legend
A Motorcycle Built for Power and Prestige
The Sokół 1000, produced by the Centralne Warsztaty Samochodowe (later Państwowe Zakłady Inżynierii) in Warsaw between 1933 and 1939, was Poland’s most prestigious and powerful motorcycle of the interwar period. Designed for the military, police, and long-distance touring, it combined strength, reliability, and an imposing presence on the road.
Heavy-Duty Design for Demanding Tasks
Built on a rigid steel frame with a long wheelbase, the Sokół 1000 was made to carry heavy loads—often with a sidecar—over rough roads and long distances. Its robust suspension and large wheels provided stability, while the wide handlebars and comfortable seating position ensured control and comfort for the rider and passenger. The attention to detail in its construction reflected the high standards of Polish engineering at the time.
Strong and Reliable Performance
At its heart was a 995cc V-twin four-stroke engine producing around 18 horsepower, paired with a 3-speed gearbox and hand-operated gear lever. The engine’s smooth torque delivery made it ideal for pulling sidecars or climbing steep inclines. Its rugged build and simple mechanics meant it could operate reliably in challenging conditions, from cobbled streets to muddy rural tracks.
Service on the Road and in Uniform
The Sokół 1000 served widely in the Polish Army, where it was used for reconnaissance, dispatch riding, and escort duties. Civilian versions were favored by touring riders who valued its long-distance comfort and load-carrying ability. Its distinctive exhaust note and commanding appearance turned heads wherever it went.
A Rare and Treasured Classic
With production ending before World War II and many bikes lost during the conflict, surviving Sokół 1000s are now extremely rare. Restored examples are prized by collectors and displayed at vintage motorcycle events as symbols of Poland’s pre-war engineering excellence.
