Romet Komar — Poland’s Beloved People’s Moped
A Moped Built for the Masses
The Romet Komar, produced from the early 1960s through the 1980s by Zakłady Rowerowe Romet, became one of Poland’s most popular mopeds. Affordable, easy to operate, and economical to run, it provided everyday mobility for students, workers, and rural residents—often becoming a first step into the world of motorized transport.
Lightweight and Practical Design
The Komar featured a simple steel bicycle-style frame with a small petrol engine mounted in the middle, keeping weight low and handling easy. Its 19-inch wheels, full mudguards, and upright riding position made it comfortable for daily use, whether in towns or along country lanes. A rear luggage rack and basic suspension added practicality for carrying light loads or groceries.
Reliable Two-Stroke Performance
Powered by a 49cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine producing around 1.4–1.7 horsepower, the Komar could reach speeds of up to 40–45 km/h. The engine was mated to a two- or three-speed manual gearbox, with simple controls that made it accessible to new riders. Low fuel consumption and easy maintenance kept running costs to a minimum.
Everyday Mobility for All
The Romet Komar was used for everything from commuting to school or work to short-distance deliveries and weekend rides. In rural areas, it often served as a lifeline, enabling quick trips to shops, markets, or neighboring villages without the need for a car.

Although production ended decades ago, the Komar remains a beloved classic among vintage moped enthusiasts. Restored examples—often sporting their original bright paint and Romet decals—are proudly displayed at rallies and classic vehicle shows, evoking memories of simpler times on the road.
