Jelcz 272 MEX — Poland’s Classic “Ogórek” Bus

A Bus Built for the People

The Jelcz 272 MEX, affectionately nicknamed Ogórek (“Cucumber”) for its rounded body shape, was a familiar sight on Polish roads from the early 1960s through the late 1970s. Built under license from the Czech Škoda 706 RTO at the Jelcz factory, it became a symbol of public transport in cities, towns, and rural areas alike.

Distinctive Rounded Design

With its smooth curves, split front windscreen, and large side windows, the Jelcz 272 MEX offered passengers a bright, airy ride. The high roofline and wide doors made boarding easy, while the interior’s simple, durable fittings were designed to withstand years of daily service. Painted in vivid red-and-cream or other regional liveries, the Ogórek was instantly recognizable and warmly remembered.

Reliable and Functional

Powered by a robust inline-six diesel engine mounted in the front, the Jelcz 272 MEX was built for steady, dependable service rather than speed. Its manual gearbox and straightforward mechanical layout made maintenance simple, even for smaller depots. The bus could carry over 70 passengers—seated and standing—making it ideal for busy urban routes and longer intercity journeys.

Serving Poland and Beyond

The Ogórek was not only used in Poland but also exported to other Eastern Bloc countries. In its home country, it served as a city bus, intercity coach, school transport, and even as a mobile library or touring vehicle. Its versatility and reliability kept it in service for decades, long after newer models appeared.

A Beloved Symbol of an Era

Today, preserved Jelcz 272 MEX buses are stars of transport museums and vintage rallies. Many have been lovingly restored to their original colors, offering nostalgic rides for new generations. For countless Poles, the Ogórek is a rolling memory of childhood trips, school commutes, and family holidays.
